Cognitive Performance Testing (CPT)
for those Living with Dementia
Cognitive Performance Testing is Now Available
D-CAN is now offering a new dementia-related service called Cognitive Performance Testing (CPT) on-site at our Dementia Resource Center Clinic in St. Cloud. This specialized service requires a certified professional, and we are thrilled to have contracted with certified occupational therapist Katrina Sand, OTR/L, who will see clients on Wednesdays at our clinic.
CPT measures a person’s ability to safely and effectively perform common necessary daily living tasks and provides a numerical score that strongly correlates with the ability to do things like living alone, handling medication dosing/administration, driving, and personal care, among other things. The numerical score offers an unbiased estimation of their ability levels. Clinicians use this information to make decisions and recommendations for clients and caregivers.
How is a CPT Different?
CPT scoring differs from our other cognitive tests by providing additional information that clients and caregivers can use to make clinical and daily living decisions. For example, a person may have trouble expressing themselves with words, which would lower their MOCA test scores, but at the same time, they may be quite capable of living alone or driving. So, CPT can add to the validity of making recommendations for clients’ daily living or clinical decisions.

Read Katrina's Bio
Katrina is an independent contractor, occupational therapist who is passionate about helping individuals with dementia live their lives to their fullest potential. Occupational therapists strive to maximize safety and independence with daily activities, and Katrina is excited to join the Central Minnesota Dementia Community Action Network (D-CAN) care team where she will provide the Cognitive Performance Test (CPT). This standardized, objective, task-based assessment is unique in that it allows clients, their care partners, and their medical providers to better understand the individual’s real-life, every day care needs so his or her independence and safety can be best supported. The CPT addresses many common concerns such as safety with medication management, safety with cooking and household management, and recommendations for level/type of care needed.
Katrina has ten years of clinical experience with special interests in home safety, cognitive assessment, and dementia care. When she’s not at D-CAN, she can often be found chasing around her three young children, or driving along the back roads of rural Central Minnesota where she provides home health OT services. Katrina lives in Albany, Minnesota with her family and enjoys reading, singing in the car, and baking (where chocolate is measured with the heart, of course!).
Katrina has a BA in Communication Studies from Luther College in Decorah, IA, and a Master of Arts in Occupational Therapy (MAOT) from St. Catherine University in St. Paul, MN.
